PC133 is SDRAM type of memory and designed and optimized to operate at 133 MHz bus clock frequency. Though the concept of synchronous RAM was there since 1970, the SDRAM memory modules gained its acceptance in the market in the early ninety only. Earlier DRAM modules which are asynchronous in nature were popular due to better response time as the synchronous module has to wait for clock signal for responding to control signal.
SDRAM is more complex than the DRAM as it also allows pipelining of instructions which means the instruction can be read and wait for turn for its execution even though execution of earlier instruction is in progress. It also introduces latency or delay in its operation. However, the benefits of using SDRAM lies in its capability to allow using multiple banks of memory modules for interleaving operations and thus could offer increased effective bandwidth or data transfer rate. Today all manufacturers have adopted the SDRAM specification laid down by JEDEC for inter operability of memory modules produced by them.
Further, after formulation of SDRAM specification JEDEC also subsequently included other SDRAM standards such as for DDR, DDR2, and DDR3 SDRAMs. The PC 133 memory modules have a 64-bit-wide bus and operate at a potential of 3.3 V. Packaged in both DIMM and SO DIMM format it comes in 168 pin and 144 pin configuration for DIMM and SO DIMM packages respectively. PC133 is capable of delivering peak data transfer rate of 1064 MB/s. PC133 is backward compatible with PC100 memory modules and is fastest SDRAM type memory.
